Varidesk: It may help or it may not, it depends

On two separate ergonomic assessments a Varidesk was present. The two companies value their employees and had the best intentions of providing this newly popular device. In general, it's a great idea to change postures especially sitting to standing and vice-versa. The benefits are well documented. On one occasion, it was a hindrance and on another it worked as advertised. On the one ergonomic assessment, the employee had paper documents strewn about the desk. They were papers that she had to have as a purchaser for a major defense contractor in Cocoa Beach. Unfortunately, she had neck pains (the reason I was called in). It was found that in the standing position, she frequently bent and twisted her neck to view the docs that were on her main desk - the desk under the Varidesk. There wasn't enough space on top of the Varidesk for what looked like a mess of papers to me. It wasn't working for her. She needed a larger sit-to-stand desk for her purposes. On a separate occasion, I was called in to survey 70 workstations. One had a Varidesk that worked like a champ. I gave kudos as it was perfect for her in the sitting and standing positions. She only had to work with the occasional paper doc. Everything looked picture perfect. When considering a Varidesk, make sure everything that you use frequently will fit on top of the Varidesk, including the phone base. You'll save yourself neck pains if this is the case.
